Founder of Def Jam Records Russell Simmons stated that he loved Adam Yauch dearly and is devastated at his departure. He said that Yauch was an inspiration and will be missed.

Adam Yauch was born in 1964 in Brooklyn and was a self taught musician since an early age. He was a devout Buddhist and humanitarian.

Adam Yauch was one of the very rare cases of salivary gland cancer where the patient develops a tumour at a younger age. According to statistics, most of the affected Americans developed the condition after 55, whereas the rare cancer is diagnosed in two adults in 100,000 per annum.

Dr. Amy Chen of Emory University in Atlanta told the media that parotid cancer is extremely rare and fairly unusual in general nature – no matter how less the chances but the cancer can develop in individuals of any age. The total survival rate of the disease is solely dependent on whether the cancer has spread out or not.

Adam Yauch felt the cancerous lump for the first time in July 2009 and inferred that he had swollen glands. Yauch’s cancer was in a lymph node; he underwent two months of radiation treatment as well as surgery for his salivary gland cancer.

If the cancer has not spread and is in stage I, doctors state that there is a 91% survival rate for five years. However if the cancer is in stage IV the survival rate drops as low as 39%. This cancer can spread to organs like the lungs and cause even more difficult scenarios. Due to the rarity of the condition scientists don’t have much to say regarding its cause – there are no links established between smoking, alcohol and salivary gland cancer.
